Goodreads offers a free program for published authors that offers a variety of features to help make readers aware of books and even help facilitate book giveaways to help drive awareness and reviews.

In addition, Goodreads provides widgets that can be added to your blog site:

  • The Reviews widget is used to show the reviews for a specific book so it should be added to the page for the book on your website.
  • The Add to My Books widget allows Goodreads members to add your book to their shelves so it should also be added to the page for the book on your website.
  • The Books widget shows your books and their ratings so it should be added to the home page on your website or the primary page where you talk about your writing.
  • Smaller buttons are also available if you prefer to add something less obtrusive than widgets to your website.

One of Goodreads most popular features is their book giveaway system. A giveaway generates awareness of the book, increases the number of readers that add that book to the Goodreads shelves, and helps drive reviews. According to Goodreads, over 800 people enter the average giveaway and most add the book to their to-read shelf.

When a book is added to a shelf or is reviewed then it shows up in the update feeds of the reader’s friends. Having reviews on the book’s page on Goodreads also increases the likelihood that the book will be added to other readers’ shelves, purchased, read, reviewed, and recommended.

I will do another how-to post on book giveaways in the near future. First, however, you’ll need to join Goodreads and the Author Program.

That said, the title of this post is “How to Join the Goodreads Author Program” so let’s get it done! I recommend printing this blog post so you can see what needs to be done without clicking back and forth between screens and can cross through the words in each step as you complete them.

__ sign in on Goodreads if you are a member; if you are not a member yet then register
__ search for yourself or your book and click your author name listed below the title of your book to be taken to your author profile page with your name at the top and “author profile” to the right
__ look for the “Is this you?” question half way down the page and click the “Let us know” link next to it to be taken to the page where you send a message to Goodreads to let them know you want to join the program and to ask any questions you may have
__ look for a message in your email inbox within a week or so to confirm that you have been added to the program and provide additional instructions on what to do next; your user profile will be merged with your author profile so you still use the same username and password

That’s it! Joining the Goodreads Author Program is rather simple, but the program can be a powerful tool to help you market your book.

Look for a post in the near future on how to do a book giveaway on Goodreads…
